Arad Israel



Arad Israel is a town in Israel that borders the Negev and Judaean Deserts. Arad provides mild weather conditions throughout the year and the air is fresh and dry, an added benefit for those with respiratory illnesses. Arad is close in proximity to many areas of interest and sights to see such as the Negev desert.

History

Arad Israel was established in 1962 by young Israelis looking for a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The current population is approximately 23,000 according to a 2009 estimate and reflects the diversity of Israeli society.



Getting Around and Accessing Information

Buses traveling to Arad and the Dead Sea are available from Beer Sheva, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other cities. There is a visitors center located in the downtown area near to the mall and community center. Information is available about events, trails and where to visit for those that need it. There's a display of artifacts, video presentation with maps and hiking routes available for purchase.

Places to go and Things to do

The Negev desert is one of main attractions in Arad Israel covering over half of the total land area. Its beautiful scenery is chock full of things to do for adventurers. There are ancient ruins to explore and natural wonders like the Dead Sea and Mitzpe Roman's crater.

The Bedouin experience includes a camel ride, traditional meals and sleeping in an authentic Bedouin tent. The Bedouins have been in the Negev Desert for hundreds of years.

Another noteworthy attraction is the Tel Arad National Park, which is made up of two parts. The upper city, an Israelite settlement from King David and Solomon's time and the lower city which was a city from the Bronze Age.

Masada is an ancient fortress atop a mountain overlooking the Dead Sea. This impressive structure dates back to 30 B.C. and contains the remnants of King Herod's palace. There is a well known and liked Light and Sound Show that takes place in Masada and runs from March through October. There is only one route to the show and its from Arad.

Spectacular Views of History and Nature

For the beginner and advanced level hikers, there's hiking trails all throughout Arad to meet your needs. The Yatir Forest has a trail that runs all the way through the forest and by Tel Arad.
